Advocating for students: Lecture capture policy

Co-creative work to support students with disabilities, outside responsibilities and English as an additional language.

About the project

Project duration: 2023/24 academic year
Collaboration with:

  • Disabilities office within London College of Communication (LCC)
  • LCC Digital Learning Champions team

Changemakers involved: Mia Davey (LCC Changemaker 2023-2024)

Context

In 2023/24 academic year, Digital Learning Champions started work towards writing a policy document around Lecture capture policy based on their several case studies.

Mia’s contributions

Following up on pushback from staff to the Digital Learning Champions efforts to implement digital lecture capture, Mia set out to answer the following research questions:

  • Why should lecture capture be important for UAL?
  • Who will benefit from the lecture capture?

She focused on cohorts of students with:

  • disabilities (mental and physical)
  • outside responsibilities (carers, working students, etc.)
  • English as additional language students.

Findings

Impacts on course session

Lecture capture recordings free the students from concentrating on notetaking and engage more in active learning, such as engaging in discussions during lectures and problem-solving activities.

Impacts on student experience

Satisfaction: students report lower satisfaction levels for courses that do not have lecture capture materials.

Support: students feel included and supported by universities which allow them to prioritise their health and wellbeing

Outcome: Lecture Capture Policy
